W&AS Bruce Supports Local Athlete Lauren Williamson on her Journey to the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships

BROXBURN, UK – 03 October 2024 – W&AS Bruce proudly announced their support for local athlete Lauren Williamson by presenting her with a cheque for £1500. This generous donation represents half of the funds needed for Lauren to compete in the upcoming Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships in South Africa. The 24-year-old powerlifter from Bathgate will represent Scotland at this prestigious event, marking an incredible milestone in her athletic career. The cheque was handed over by Janine Toland at the gym where Lauren works and trains.

Lauren expressed her gratitude for the support from W&AS Bruce, stating, “Their support means so much, and I am incredibly thankful to Janine and the firm. I am so appreciative of their very generous donation, which means I can travel to South Africa and compete with ease and focus on my training fully instead of worrying about how to finance the competition—as I only found out I was invited in July! Their support has been invaluable, and I’m so grateful.”

Lauren’s powerlifting journey began just 2.5 years ago after completing a personal training course. Despite initial struggles, she persevered and found inspiration in another woman, who became her coach. This unwavering support from Annie Nelson (A.N Strong Coaching) has resulted in Lauren securing the Scottish squat record and earning an invitation to represent her country. Lauren’s dedication to her sport is evident in her rigorous training schedule of five sessions per week, each lasting around two hours.

The opportunity to compete in South Africa arose after Lauren’s impressive performance at the Scottish Classics, where her efforts caught the attention of the organisers. “It was such a shock and honour and I still can’t believe it!!” Lauren remarked about her invitation.

Lauren’s connection to W&AS Bruce comes through Partner Janine Toland, based in the firm’s Broxburn office. Close family friends with Lauren’s family, Janine was determined to help when she learned about Lauren’s need to raise funds quickly. “I am all about championing women in any environment, but Lauren’s story stood out to me – how she overcame mental health challenges by throwing herself into something that would help her mentally, as well as physically. Her sheer determination and dedication are truly inspiring. There wasn’t much convincing required when I took it to the rest of the Partners – they were all on board and as a firm, we are thrilled to take some of the pressure off Lauren so she can focus on the competition ahead. We want to wish her the best of luck and hope she has the most incredible experience in South Africa,” said Janine.

The 2024 Commonwealth Equipped and Classic Powerlifting Championships will be held in Sun City, South Africa, from 4-13 October 2024, alongside the International Powerlifting Federation Master Worlds. Lauren will fly to South Africa on Wednesday, 2nd October, and everyone at W&AS Bruce is eager to hear about her experiences upon her return.

Janine remarked, “We are excited to follow Lauren’s journey and share her successes with our community. Let’s cheer on this inspiring young woman as she prepares to make her mark on the global powerlifting stage representing our country.”
