Fees
There is no standard fee for a notarial execution of documents. Fees usually match fees charged by a specialist solicitor in the same geographical location.
We offer very competitive rates and discounts for multiple copies of the same document.
Prospective clients are provided with an estimate of fees and disbursements for the required service. To receive an estimate, please send a copy of the document that requires notarisation by faxing it to 01383 729105 or emailing notary@wasbruce.co.uk. We can then assess the work required and provide you with an accurate estimate.
Legalisation
Legalisation is the process by which the identity and authority of a notary is verified or certified by the state in which the notary is authorised to practise.
In most cases Scottish notarial documents need to be legalised before they can be effective in a particular foreign jurisdiction.
Legalisation is normally done at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office or at the Consular Office of the country where the document is to be used, or at both offices (Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Foreign Consulate).
Foreign and Commonwealth Office legalisation
Those countries who are parties to The Hague Convention of 5 October 1961 [http://www.hcch.net] require that the document is apostilled. In the UK this is done by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and consists of presenting the document to a C.F.O. officer, who will check the credentials of the authorising notary and affix a certicate or Apostille on the notarised document.
In some cases, for example where the documents are to be used in contentious matters, certain countries may also require consular legalisations despite being parties to The Hague Convention.
We can arrange legalisation at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office for our clients.
Consular legalisation
Those countries who are not parties to The Hague Convention 1961 often require legalisation at any of their local consulates in the UK.
The consular officer will examine the document and place a certificate confirming the validity of the notarised document. Timescales for legalisation depend on the Consulate.
In many countries consular authorities require that the document is previously apostilled at the Foreign and Commonwealth office.
